County Cup Defeat for Under 15's
By Lee Lawrence
A tough battling performance ends in defeat, but football was the overall winner.
With 2 previous meetings resulting in 2 defeats last season 8-0 And 7-1 this cup fixture was always gonna be a uphill struggle for the girls and to make matters worse we only had 1 sub for a 80 minute game.
Broadheath as expected came out all guns blazing from the 1st whistle there shear physical presence dominating the girls early on pinning them back with 3 or 4 early chances but with Lucy starting this season in brilliant form she easily matched each shot with one dipping shot producing a acrobatic save. 15 mins in and girls suddenly realised they were the superior footballing team with some great one touch passing being produced in midfield, and in a blink of an eye a pin point pass over there backline from holly had Sophie sprinting clear easily making up 3 or 4 yards to slot away for 1-0. Broadheath then came back but the defence of Megan, Jodie, Amber and Savannah were holding firm, the right and left backs were tirelessly chasing there wingers, blocking shot after shot while Jodie an Amber were as firm as always but a loss of concentration led to the equaliser 1-1. At this point the holding midfielder Chanelle took control time after time she chased there number 9 who was more like a u18 winning the ball and then setting another attack off. Georgia who was a thorn in there side all game on the left carried the ball on numerous occasions under enormous pressure being shoved and kicked but showed great mentality to keep going with a smile on her face. BOOM 2-1 a great counter and Georgia with a solo run down the left finishes from a tight angle.
At this point it was back and forth Holly and Kira breaking down attack after attack from Broadheath. Kira, as Kira does, keeping the team motivated and always giving positive advice. With Broadheath's unsportsmanlike tactics still going on Jodie was on the end of a nasty collision resulting in being subbed, with Ellie our only sub coming on with her energy and relentless running, soon got up to speed with the game. With our energy levels dropping before the halftime it was Abbie who had such a difficult role as a lone striker made run after run closing down there defenders to release the pressure on her team she was fouled over and over again but this girl is made of strong stuff and was relentless, going close with many efforts. 3-2 With the girls needing halftime Broadheath pounced on a lapse of concentration.
2nd half was a completely different story the girls came out with a real steely confidence they started to really let there feet do the talking, Sophie who's touch and turn was exceptional all game started to attack there left back who must of thought what hit her with a jinking run and 2 nutmegs resulting in a powerful shot just over the bar. With Jodie back, Sophie who needed to recover from her attacks went off with Ellie again coming on to help the team.
4-2 against the run of play a great effort from there right winger was smashed into the top corner totally against the run of play, Lucy had no chance. This did nothing to dampen the girls spirits with some great midfield interchanges the ball fell to Abbie who slotted it away with ease 4-3. The girls at this point were on top with 15 minutes to go it was attack after attack every girl knowing there job and like a perfect oiled machine were creating chances from all over the pitch, with all the girls pushing for the equaliser a tired Broadheath defender kicked a hopeful long ball forward and with a blink of an eye there speedy right winger pounced on a little hesitation from our defence, to slot it away from distance 5-3, Last 5 minutes the girls running on empty they threw everything at Broadheath including the kitchen sink their keeper who had a fine game holding onto everything but with a mix up in defence due to the pressure the girls were putting on them, they sliced an on target Georgia effort into there own net 5-4....
Last few minutes there was some tough tackles going in, Amber being involved in most with a battling attitude there was only going to be 1 winner...
A defeat but what a performance the girls certainly became a team today sometimes more can be learnt in defeat than a win and it was a absolute pleasure to witness a group of girls giving every last breath for there teammates.
Coaches PoM was probably easiest decision of the season every girl earning that honour, with a great mix of characters and ages this group of girls are not just becoming great footballers they are blossoming into mature group of ladies. #tamesideutdgirls
